Bob Sheridan    October 15, 2005

Last  year the world of paleoanthropology got a big surprise. A new hominin
specimen  from Liang Bua cave on the Indonesian island of Flores in Indonesia
was  described by Brown et al. (2004)(See Paleontograph Volume 14, Issue 12).
This specimen, called LB1, consisting of a complete skull and other bits,
has a  very strange mixture of characteristics. The specimen has a very small
stature, about a meter tall, a very small brain relative to the body in a
skull very much like that of Homo erectus, and a very young age, about  18,000
years. LB1 is clearly a fully grown adult (female?), having all teeth  erupted
and a fused skull. No one expected anything except modern humans to  exist
that recently and no one has seen any hominin that small other than
Australopithecus afarensis (e.g. Lucy). The putative name given to this  hominin is Б  Homo
floresiensisБ  , but the nickname that has stuck is  Б  hobbitБ  , after the
fictional small folk described by J.R.R. Tolkein. A number  of stone tools are found
in the same cave, from an earlier time (95-74 kyr),
and specimens of modern humans are found in the most recent cave  sediments.

Raising the objection that a new specimen with unexpected  characteristics
might be a deformed modern human, instead of representing a new  species, seems
to be a tradition in paleo-anthropology, going back to the  discovery of
Neanderthals in the 1850s. One alternative explanation is that LB1  represents a
race of modern human pygmies. Certainly, todayБ  s pygmies have large  brains and
a prominent chin, something that LB1 does not have. Some workers  argue that
LB1 is a modern human pygmy with microcephaly, not a pygmy Homo  erectus.
Microcephaly is a pathological condition where the brain does not grow.  Some
months ago, the brain cavity of LB1 was CT-scanned, and indeed its brain  resembled
that of Homo erectus. However, as late as this week there was  argument in
the Technical Comment section of Science (Weber et al., 2005  and Falk et al.,
2005) whether LB1Б  s brain could also resemble the brains of  microcephalics
because the range of brain sizes and shapes in microcephalics can  be large.

Such arguments have been rendered moot by the new description  of more
specimens from Flores (Morwood et al. 2005). The new specimens consist  of several
arm and leg bones, a second mandible, and other pieces. At least nine
individuals are represented. Clearly, since the second mandible lacks a chin, we  can
be certain that LB1 is not any form modern human. Comparison of the Flores
fossil humeri and ulni to those of modern human pygmies (who are generally
larger than Homo floresiensis) shows that these fossil arm bones are much  thicker
for their length than expected. Also one can plot the
length of the  arm bones to the length of the femur. The Flores fossils have
longer arms  relative to legs than modern humans or Homo erectus, somewhat
like  A. aferensis, i.e. more Б  primitive.Б   Given the more apelike
proportions,  the brain to body ratio is likely to be even smaller than first thought,
again  more like Australopithecus than Homo erectus. Note however, that the
rounded skull and flattish face is still more like that of Homo erectus,  i.e.
more Б  advanced.Б

Dates of the new specimens have a large range. Some  are as recent as 12,000
years and some perhaps as old as 95,000 years. It seems  unlikely that a race
of pygmy microcephalics lasted for that long, so the idea  that H.
floresiensis is a new hominin seems confirmed. On the other hand,  the
original idea that Homo floresiensis represents an offshoot of  Homo erectus
that came to Flores and became dwarfed, as do many island  animals, seems less
likely. It is not clear if the tools and evidence for fire  in Liang Bua are
from Homo floresiensis or from modern humans as the  bones and tools are never
found together. Some argue that H. floresiensis  had too small a brain to
make tools that good.

Another controversy  reported by all the journals is the political problems
between the team from  the University of New England (in Wales) that
reported the find and  Teuku Jacob, senior paleontologist of Indonesia. Jacob
is of the strong opinion  that the bones represent a genetically deformed
Homo sapiens. Jacob was  loaned the original fossils last winter and some of them
were returned damaged,  much to the outrage of the University team. Then, the
permits for digging  were never issued for the 2005 season, and suspicions
are aroused that the  Indonesian government is hindering further exploration
lest Jacob be proved  wrong. Paleoanthropologists are a contentious lot, and
emotionally-charged  personal feuds with charges and countercharges about Б
misconductБ  are amply  precedented.

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh
